Mexico 2013
Some of my earliest memories are of as a very young child, being in Mexico with my family. Ever since, I’ve been drawn back repeatedly, fascinated and energized by a vibrant country, full of mystery, history and whole lot of contradictions.
My recent two week visit allowed me to be unencumbered by any agenda or meeting other people’s expectations. The goal was to photograph and not spend a lot of time intellectualizing. Being on the ground and driving was essential. No preconceived notions, no nod to history or trends as difficult or impossible as that may be. Just my own response to what was in front of me: To remain open to all possibilities.
Portraits, landscapes, street scenes; the types of things that I used to do as a younger documentary photographer, before I became a commercial free-lancer being busy with trying to create a sustainable career, a family, a home; the things that define our lives outside of our passions.
My working title, was My Mexican Experience (My M.E.). I called it that to add a little bit of levity to what was a serious undertaking; the attempt to return to the beginning of what I did before I learned all the advanced skills. An attempt to be more instinctual, less cerebral, less concerned with whatever came before, to create my own “ return to forever” and the essence of why I wanted to make photographs in the first place.
